Whats up with mould?

Complaints arising from mould related issues in new homes is estimated to have increased by 40%, and in old homes even higher. Why is this? In our opinion there are a few reasons including the push to make homes more energy efficient, the lack of in-house ventilation, the build up of water vapour due to poor ventilation and the condensation not being able to move through the structure (improper construction), water leaks, improper drainage and ventilated cavities as well as the use of cheap timbers e.g MDF.

Symptoms.

Long term exposer to mould is known to cause lung issues, skin issues, asthma, eczema, pneumonia, hay fever, chronic fatigue and more. In children in particular, it can cause brain fog and developmental disorders when exposed to high amounts.

What to do?

Mould needs to be SAFLEY remediated by a professional. When the mould effected building materials are taken out, the mycotoxins explode throughout the home. Proper mould remediation needs to be done so the problem does not spread. The experts remediating the mould must be protected with the correct PPE. The next step is to engage a builder who is aware of the effects of mould in the home so that the subsequent construction can be built in a way that the problems won’t come back. In the case of mould build up where large scale removal is not required, different ventilation tactics can be implemented to fix the issue.
